Next to Nothing, 2013

Next to Nothing consists of three panels of white silk with black typeface. The words aligned consecutively overlay each other to a graphic scenery. The text is a continual poem, it is a collage

of words cut out of a novel and combined to a new message. The motif is based upon a picture

of a plastic bag digitally divided into several layers, that were converted into vector paths and filled

with letters. The different typographic layers complement one antother to the overall picture.

The more textlayers overlap the darker becomes the structure. The transfer process works with mirror-inverted laser prints, dissolved by application of nitro-cellulose thinner and reprinted

laterally correct onto the silk.

At close range the fragments of text are readable, from distance the writing becomes abstract,

The picture becomes a cartography, the original drapes of a plastic bag now resemble a mountainous

lanscape with the course of a river.

The text sais: We were silent / Next to nothing / Waiting for the word / Everything seemed to have stopped / Perhaps only seconds / Seven or eight beats of waiting / And perhaps hours / Yours different from mine / You probably think / I can’t say this word to you / I reserved for my private irritation / The reason was despite / I felt a part of me escape / And leave lightly for some time / When we parted we fell silent again / And I threw away the boxes
